OpenAI Launches Dots, Persistent AI Agents Designed to Keep Working After Users Step Away

Diajem News· 2 min read· 3 days ago

OpenAI has introduced Dots, a new class of persistent AI agents designed to continue working toward user goals even when the user is no longer actively chatting with the system.

The product represents another step away from the conventional chatbot model, where a user asks a question and waits for an answer, toward software that can carry out longer-running work across connected services.

OpenAI says each dot has access to its own cloud computer, is powered by GPT-6 Astra and can connect through its plugin ecosystem to more than 4,000 applications. Dots can be reached through ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams.

From answering questions to continuing work

The important change is persistence. A dot can be given a goal, continue working in the background, return with progress and ask for approval when a sensitive action requires it.

OpenAI says early internal uses include investigating software problems raised in workplace chat, turning designs into working applications and helping teams keep complex projects moving. The company also describes an early tester whose dot prepared an invoice and sent it only after receiving approval.

That does not mean every task can be delegated without supervision. The company says users control which services a dot can access and can require review before actions are taken.

Why this matters to smaller businesses

Persistent agents could be particularly significant for businesses that do not have large administrative, software or operations teams.

A small company could eventually use an agent to monitor enquiries, research suppliers, prepare reports, update project records, draft customer communications or coordinate tasks across several applications. For African and Caribbean businesses, that could reduce the cost of some forms of automation if the tools become widely available and affordable in their markets.

But broader access also raises new questions. The more accounts, files and systems an agent can reach, the more important permissions, audit trails and approval rules become.

Rollout is starting gradually

OpenAI says Dots are beginning to roll out across Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise plans in eligible markets, with wider expansion planned. That means availability will not be identical in every country at launch.

The company is also previewing specialist organisational dots intended for controlled access management and deeper links to internal company systems.

For DGBN, the key issue is not whether persistent agents replace workers wholesale. The more immediate question is how quickly they change the cost and structure of routine knowledge work, particularly for small businesses, media organisations and professional services that already rely on multiple cloud tools.
