A coming-of-age story grounded in South Los Angeles is bringing its theatrical debut to audiences next month. The new trailer for "If I Go Will They Miss Me" showcases the film's exploration of family dynamics and childhood perception, introducing viewers to the world of a young boy navigating his relationship with his father in Watts.
The film centers on 12-year-old Lil Ant, a character portrayed by newcomer Bodhi Dell, whose perspective on his father reflects the imaginative lens through which children often view the adults in their lives. As the narrative unfolds, Lil Ant's understanding of his family circumstances deepens, prompting a reassessment of his relationships and the world around him. J. Alphonse Nicholson assumes the role of the father figure, while Danielle Brooks completes the principal cast in this intimate family portrait.
The project marks a significant step forward for writer-director Walter Thompson-Hernández, who previously explored similar thematic territory through a 2022 short film bearing the same title. That earlier work gained recognition at the Sundance Film Festival, earning the Short Film Jury Award for U.S. Fiction. Thompson-Hernández has now expanded that initial concept into a full-length feature that aims to provide deeper insight into the characters and their struggles. The director's emerging body of work has garnered industry attention, with Variety recently recognizing him among its 10 Directors to Watch, highlighting his distinctive voice in contemporary cinema.
Before its wider theatrical rollout, "If I Go Will They Miss Me" completed a successful festival circuit that validated Thompson-Hernández's artistic vision. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year and subsequently captured the Best Feature Film award at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival, establishing its resonance with audiences and critics alike. These accolades suggest the narrative strikes a chord within the African American film community and beyond.

The production brings together an impressive array of talent both in front of and behind the camera. Grammy and Academy Award winner Jon Batiste contributed music to the soundtrack and serves as an executive producer, lending his acclaimed artistry to the project's emotional landscape. Brooks and Nicholson have also taken on executive producer roles, demonstrating their investment in the film's success. MACRO, the production company led by Charles D. King, is among the entities supporting the project, alongside James Lopez and other producers including Josh Peters, Saba Zerehi, and Ben Stillman. Rich Spirit is handling distribution for the 95-minute film.
The theatrical release strategy reflects confidence in the property's commercial appeal. Los Angeles residents will have the first opportunity to experience the film during a special theatrical engagement launching September 11, positioning the movie's hometown for an initial exclusive window. Following this localized debut, "If I Go Will They Miss Me" will expand to more than 30 markets across the nation on September 18, bringing the story of Lil Ant and his father to audiences nationwide.
With festival momentum, emerging directorial talent, and a compelling story about family and coming of age, the film enters its theatrical run positioned to reach audiences seeking authentic narratives centered on Black life and experience.
