# Legal Battle Over Hidden Evidence in Karmelo Anthony Case Intensifies
The pursuit of a new trial for Karmelo Anthony has taken a dramatic turn as his legal team and prosecutors have begun exposing previously sealed records about both the defendant and the stabbing victim, Austin Metcalf. The contentious disclosure centers on an agreement made during the original trial to exclude information about both teenagers' backgrounds from jury consideration, raising questions about whether constitutional rights were violated in the process.
Anthony's new defense team has challenged the validity of the original trial arrangements, arguing that the presiding judge at that time violated the defendant's rights by conducting secret conferences and undocumented proceedings. According to defense testimony, the original agreement restricted witness testimony to events that occurred at the track meet itself, allowing Anthony to testify about self-defense claims without facing character attacks based on his background. The defense consented to these restrictions believing the arrangement would shield Anthony from allegations unrelated to the stabbing incident.
Now, before Judge Michael Chitty, who was recently assigned to replace the original judge who recused himself, both sides have begun revealing what had been previously withheld. The information coming to light paints starkly different pictures of the two teenagers involved in the fatal confrontation.
Court documents and school records have exposed a pattern of concerning behavior attributed to Metcalf. According to available records, he and his brother were arrested for spray-painting graffiti containing explicit racist messaging, including references to the Ku Klux Klan and Nazi imagery, along with racial slurs. The brothers received juvenile probation for the incident and acknowledged responsibility by telling authorities they had engaged in vandalism. School disciplinary records from 2021 onward show Metcalf was repeatedly involved in confrontational incidents, including using racial slurs in classroom settings and being accused of bullying a Black student in 2023.
The records also document multiple instances of physical aggression. In elementary school, Metcalf was arrested for allegedly bullying and assaulting a female student. In 2024, he allegedly knocked another female student to the ground and punched her in the stomach during an argument. Following his ejection from a football game that same year, he texted someone expressing intent to violently assault other attendees. School counseling records indicate he sought help on at least five occasions in 2024 regarding anger and rage issues during athletic events. Additionally, at a track meet, when informed that someone from another team was near his team's bench, Metcalf allegedly responded with violent language.
For his part, Anthony's record presented by prosecutors includes troubling text messages and documented incidents. On the morning of the stabbing, his girlfriend reported to school staff that he had engaged in stalking behavior, including driving by her home and refusing to accept the end of their relationship. Prosecutors produced numerous text messages where Anthony claimed to have assaulted girls, discussed robbing someone, and detailed fights in which he had beaten people. He was suspended from school for fighting and warned that further incidents could lead to expulsion.
Most concerning to prosecutors were text messages in which Anthony joked about shooting up his school, though he later clarified in subsequent messages that he would never actually do so. Prosecutors also referenced photographs and videos allegedly showing Anthony holding firearms.
The distinction between these revelations is significant. While Anthony's troubling behavior primarily exists in the form of text messages and school suspensions, Metcalf's documented history includes court records, arrest records, and formal school discipline for both racist hate speech and physical violence against others. His pattern of violence appears more extensive and documented in official records.
As the hearing continues before Judge Chitty, the outcome will determine whether Anthony receives a new trial based on alleged constitutional violations in how his original trial was conducted. The judge's ruling is expected soon.
