A Philadelphia native approaching her final year at Spelman College is reflecting on what it means to step into senior status at an institution steeped in tradition and transformation. For this International Studies major, becoming a senior marks more than academic progression—it signifies readiness to cross the Alumnae Arch, one of the most significant ceremonies in the historically Black women's college experience, during Commencement Weekend.
The Alumnae Arch ceremony stands as a cornerstone of Spelman's institutional culture. During this ritual, women dress in white and process through the structure in order of class seniority, with alumnae leading the way and graduating seniors following. The act of passing through the arch officially transitions a student into alumna status, creating a tangible moment of recognition for a transformation that has been developing quietly over years. The ceremony is rooted in the understanding that becoming a Spelman woman is not instantaneous but rather an accumulation of experiences, relationships, and personal growth that culminates in that symbolic passage.
This student's journey to senior year was influenced by family connection to the institution. Her aunt had walked these same paths years earlier, and the stories she shared about campus life shaped her aspirations long before arrival. Coming to Spelman with intentionality, she sought to be shaped by the legacy of Black women who have historically built institutions and communities for themselves and each other. Over three years on campus, she has actively constructed her own legacy through leadership and creative work. These efforts represent more than resume items. They embody the gradual process through which a student becomes integrated into the fabric of the institution and claims her place within its continuum.
The weight of senior year carries different meaning when viewed through the lens of this particular milestone. Rather than functioning as preparation for something else, senior year becomes the culmination of intentional choices made throughout her college experience. Every campus tradition, every late-night conversation in dormitory hallways, every group project and early morning class takes on heightened significance because she now recognizes where it is leading. She is not waiting to become a Spelman woman. She is acknowledging what she has already become through deliberate action and commitment.
What makes this transition particularly resonant is how it bridges individual achievement and collective sisterhood. She will walk through the Arch in her own moment, taking her own steps, yet she will be surrounded by women whose influence shaped her path and whose paths she may have shaped in return.
