The American Black Film Festival is making a historic move to the West Coast. Following its 30th anniversary celebration earlier this year, the prestigious gathering will relocate to Los Angeles for its 2027 edition, marking a significant shift for an institution that has long been anchored in Miami Beach. The festival will take place May 20 through May 23, positioning itself at the center of the entertainment industry it has championed for three decades.
Founded in 1997, ABFF has established itself as a crucial platform for Black filmmakers and creators seeking to break into the television and film industries. The relocation to Los Angeles represents more than a simple change of venue—it places participating filmmakers and attendees in direct proximity to the studios, streaming services, and production companies that drive the entertainment landscape. The festival will utilize multiple prestigious locations throughout the city, including the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, AMC The Grove for screenings, and SLS Beverly Hills as the hub for industry events. Programming will also extend to the Original Farmers Market, with additional venues to be announced as planning continues.
The move signals the festival's evolution as it enters its fourth decade of operation. According to founder Jeff Friday, the decision reflects ABFF's core mission of creating access and opportunity for emerging talent. Friday emphasized that the festival's responsibility moving forward involves expanding possibilities for the next generation of storytellers. This philosophy has long guided ABFF's programming, which provides pathways for new voices while maintaining rigorous standards for the work presented.
The 2027 edition will introduce several new initiatives alongside its established offerings. A newly created First Look showcase will give audiences early access to upcoming films and series from major studios, streaming platforms, and independent distributors. A dedicated platform focused on sports will examine how athletics and entertainment intersect, featuring screenings and conversations with industry professionals working in both fields. These additions reflect the festival's effort to broaden its scope and relevance within the cultural landscape.
Expanding accessibility remains a central theme in the programming additions. A new noncompetitive section called Crossroads will accept submissions from filmmakers of any background, provided their narrative features or documentaries explore identity or community through American experiences. This move complements ABFF's other categories, which continue to prioritize work created by filmmakers of African descent, including the U.S. Narrative Feature, International Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, and Episodic Series competitions.
The festival's partnership with HBO continues with the HBO Short Film Award Showcase, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2027. This program has consistently served as a launching pad for emerging filmmakers, with selected winners eligible for Academy Award consideration in the Live Action Short Film category. ABFF's status as an Academy Award-qualifying festival enhances its value to the creative community.
Additionally, the festival is adapting to contemporary media consumption habits. The ABFF 9:16 Microdrama Project will showcase vertical episodic series designed specifically for mobile viewing, featuring work from creators of African descent. A complementary program called Voices of Culture will present curated short-form projects selected through invitation or internal review.
The physical relocation from Miami Beach, where ABFF had maintained a strong presence throughout its history, represents a strategic decision to embed the festival within Hollywood's institutional power centers. Festival passes will go on sale September 1, with advance reservation access available to passholders. Submissions for eligible categories are currently open through FilmFreeway, with complimentary transportation planned between festival venues to facilitate attendee access throughout the weekend.
