Byron Donalds has been elected Florida’s first Black governor, defeating Democratic nominee David Jolly and retaining Republican control of one of America’s largest states.

A historic breakthrough

The Republican congressman’s victory in Tuesday’s, 3 November, election will place a Black Floridian in the governor’s office for the first time. Donalds is also set to become the first Black Republican elected as governor anywhere in the United States.

Donalds, who has represented Florida’s 19th Congressional District since 2021, will succeed outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis in January 2027. DeSantis could not seek a third consecutive term.

The result carries particular significance for Black political representation in a state with a large and diverse Black population, including long-established African American communities and major Caribbean and African diaspora communities in South Florida, Orlando and Tampa Bay.

Campaign fought over affordability

The contest was more competitive than many recent statewide races in Florida. Donalds focused his campaign on household costs, property taxes, homeowners’ insurance and education, while presenting himself as a continuation of Republican governance in Tallahassee.

Jolly, a former Republican congressman who ran as a Democrat, made affordability and reform of the state’s troubled property-insurance system central themes of his campaign. He also sought to build support beyond Democratic strongholds, but faced a substantial Republican voter-registration advantage and a fundraising deficit.

Donalds is a close ally of President Donald Trump and received the president’s endorsement. At his election-night event in South Florida, he thanked Trump and told supporters that Florida remained firmly Republican.

What the result means

His election is both a milestone and a reminder that Black political representation does not come with a single ideology. Donalds has built his national profile as a conservative Republican, including as a member of the House Freedom Caucus, while also making an appeal for greater Republican support among Black voters.

For Black Floridians, the practical test of this historic win will be the policies of his administration: whether it improves access to affordable housing and insurance, strengthens public safety and economic opportunity, and responds equitably to the needs of communities often hit hardest by rising costs and hurricanes.

Florida has shifted sharply towards Republicans over the past decade, with DeSantis winning re-election in 2022 by a wide margin. Donalds’ victory extends that control, but his place in history will ensure his governorship is watched closely across the Black diaspora and the wider United States.
