Osinachi Ohale, the defender who helped Nigeria win five African titles and played at four World Cups, has retired from international football after 16 years with the Super Falcons.

A career built on trophies
The 34-year-old’s announcement closes an international career that brought 86 caps and a place in almost every major Nigerian women’s campaign of the past decade and a half.
Ohale featured at four FIFA Women’s World Cups — 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023 — and seven editions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). She finished on the winning side in five of those continental tournaments: 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024.
Big goals on the biggest stages
Two moments stand out. At the 2023 World Cup she was on the scoresheet as Nigeria beat co-hosts Australia 3-2 in the group stage, one of the Falcons’ most celebrated results on the global stage.
At the 2024 WAFCON final she scored again as Nigeria came back from two goals down to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 and lift a record-extending continental crown.
A global club journey
Away from the national team, Ohale built a club career that took her through the United States, Sweden and Spain, including a spell at Alavés, before a move to Mexico, where she currently plays for Pachuca.
“I would choose Nigeria every single time”
In her farewell message, Ohale said she had given the green-and-white shirt her youth, strength, sweat, tears and heart, and that she would make the same choice again. The shirt, she added, would leave her shoulders but never her heart.
Why it matters
Ohale belongs to a generation that kept the Super Falcons at the top of African women’s football while often battling for fair pay, bonuses and resources at home. Her career, spanning Africa, Europe and the Americas, mirrors the growing global reach of African women players.
Her departure leaves Nigeria’s coaching staff with the task of rebuilding a back line that relied on her experience, as the Falcons look ahead to their next continental and global campaigns.
