A 34-year-old businessman, Shawn Walker, has been charged after allegedly attempting to enter Jamaica with a significant amount of US currency in his luggage. The sum reportedly amounted to US$270,580, equivalent to J$42.8 million.
Walker, who is from Crawford District, St Elizabeth, now faces several breaches of the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA). These charges include failure to report the transportation of cash, possession of criminal property, and concealment of criminal property, highlighting the seriousness of the alleged offenses.
He reportedly arrived in Jamaica on Sunday from New Jersey, USA, when the discovery was made. The charges underscore the regulatory framework in place to monitor the movement of large sums of cash into the country.
