Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has stated that some governorship aspirants in Nigeria spend between N20 billion and N30 billion to secure electoral victories. These expenditures occur during primary elections.
Olukoyede further explained that such a trend poses a serious threat to democratic governance in the country. He also identified this significant spending as a factor that fuels corruption within public office.
In response to these concerns, the EFCC is developing plans to deploy advanced technological tools, including drones, to monitor the upcoming 2027 general elections. The commission’s focus will specifically be on combating vote-buying and other forms of financial inducements.
