Jackson State University is positioning itself as a major player in the nation's academic research landscape, pursuing a prestigious designation that has historically remained out of reach for most historically Black colleges and universities.
The Mississippi institution is pursuing the highest tier of research classification from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, a move that could substantially transform its standing in American higher education. Such a designation would unlock significant federal funding, attract world-class faculty members, draw top-performing students, and establish Jackson State as a nationally recognized research powerhouse. Currently, Howard University stands as the only HBCU holding this distinction.
The university's research initiatives span an impressively diverse range of scientific and engineering disciplines. Among the roughly 400 active research projects, one particularly innovative effort involves developing microscopic sensors that monitor oyster health along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Professor Kamal Ali and his student researchers have created technology that attaches to oyster shells, allowing scientists to track how these organisms respond to environmental stressors. This work addresses a critical regional concern: oysters once represented a major economic engine for Mississippi's Gulf communities, generating approximately $100 million in revenue before hurricanes, disease, and pollution degraded coastal ecosystems. Vice President of Research and Economic Development Alesha Campbell has articulated a strategic vision focused on diversifying funding sources. Jackson State's ambitious agenda has gained external momentum through its membership in the newly established Association of HBCU Research Institutions, a coalition of 14 institutions created specifically to help member universities compete for larger grants and strengthen research capabilities. Harvard University has lent its support to this collaborative initiative, recognizing the potential for HBCUs to expand their research footprint when properly resourced and coordinated.
