The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved new guidelines to curb the abuse of honorary doctorates in Nigeria. These new regulations introduce stricter eligibility requirements for universities intending to confer such awards. Additionally, they will restrict the total number of honorary degrees that can be granted by institutions.
A significant part of the new guidelines is the prohibition for recipients from using the title “Dr” if the degree is purely honorary. This measure aims to distinguish between earned academic doctorates and those conferred honorarily.
The government’s action comes as a response to perceived widespread misuse and devaluation of honorary doctorates. The move is intended to restore integrity and academic respect to the process of awarding such prestigious titles across Nigerian universities.
