Passengers booked on MSC Poesia’s Caribbean voyage are still awaiting a full explanation after US Coast Guard inspectors detained the ship in Miami and MSC Cruises cancelled the sailing.
Voyage cancelled after two-day delay
The Panama-flagged vessel was due to leave PortMiami on Sunday, 1 November, for an 11-night itinerary including Jamaica, Belize, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras. Instead, it remained alongside while the Coast Guard carried out what it described as an expanded examination.

MSC confirmed the cancellation on Tuesday, 3 November, after passengers had spent two nights aboard. The company said a regulatory matter had arisen before departure and could not be resolved in time for the voyage to proceed.
The cruise line has said affected guests will receive a full refund of their cruise fare and assistance with journeys home. Reports based on the company’s communication to passengers say it is also offering a future-cruise credit equal to the fare paid, as well as reimbursement for eligible changes to onward travel.
Inspectors cite onboard deficiencies
US Coast Guard Sector Miami said it had identified deficiencies in systems aboard the ship and was working with MSC to address them. Officials have not publicly specified which systems were involved, nor said what triggered the expanded inspection.

The vessel will remain detained until the deficiencies are corrected and it receives clearance to depart, the Coast Guard said. MSC has stated that the safety and health of guests and crew were not compromised.
As of Saturday, 7 November, vessel-tracking data showed MSC Poesia still moored at PortMiami. There was no public Coast Guard announcement confirming that the ship had been cleared to resume operations.
Caribbean impact reaches beyond a cancelled holiday
The cancelled sailing was set to bring visitors to several Caribbean and Central American destinations, including Ocho Rios in Jamaica and Belize City. When cruise calls are cancelled at short notice, the impact can extend beyond passengers to taxi drivers, excursion operators, craft vendors, restaurants and other small businesses that depend on visitor spending.
For Caribbean communities, the episode also underscores the importance of rigorous maritime oversight. Cruise tourism is a major economic link between North American departure ports and the region, but the safety of passengers, crew and coastal environments must come before commercial schedules.
MSC Poesia has capacity for more than 3,200 passengers and a crew of more than 1,000. Its next scheduled Miami departure is listed for 12 November, though the operator had not publicly confirmed by 7 November whether that sailing would proceed.

Passengers now have refunds and travel support promised by MSC, but the central question remains unresolved: what deficiencies led US authorities to prevent a large cruise ship from leaving port with guests already aboard?
