MSC Cruises cancelled an 11-night Caribbean voyage from Miami after the US Coast Guard detained the MSC Poesia over deficiencies found during an inspection.
Passengers left waiting at PortMiami
The Panama-flagged ship was held at PortMiami on Sunday, 1 November, as Coast Guard personnel carried out an expanded examination before departure. The sailing was due to visit Jamaica, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and Belize before returning to Miami on 12 November.

MSC Cruises confirmed on Tuesday that it had cancelled the voyage because a “regulatory matter” could not be resolved in time. The company said affected guests would receive full refunds of their cruise fares and that it was helping them with arrangements to return home.
CBS News reported that more than 2,000 people were on board, citing a source familiar with the matter. MSC Poesia has capacity for more than 3,200 passengers and more than 1,000 crew.
Coast Guard cites system deficiencies
Captain Frank Florio, commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami, said inspectors had identified deficiencies involving systems on the vessel and were working with MSC to address them. The ship will remain detained until the problems are corrected and it is cleared to depart, the Coast Guard said.
Authorities have not publicly detailed the specific deficiencies. The Coast Guard said its role is to ensure that vessels comply with international standards and US regulations, with passenger, crew, vessel and environmental safety at the centre of the inspection process.

MSC said it was cooperating fully with authorities and apologised to passengers for the disruption.
Why the disruption matters
The cancellation is especially consequential for Caribbean travel. The itinerary included Jamaica and several countries with deep African-descended populations and economies closely linked to cruise arrivals. A missed call can affect excursions, transport providers, vendors and small businesses that prepare for thousands of visitors.
For travellers, the episode is a reminder that cruise schedules depend on safety clearance as well as weather and port operations. While the sudden cancellation was disruptive, detention powers are designed to prevent vessels from sailing when regulators believe compliance concerns need to be resolved.
MSC Poesia had recently returned to Miami for a Caribbean and South American season after a refurbishment earlier in 2026, according to maritime reporting. The company continues to advertise future sailings from Miami, but no public timetable has been given for when the detained ship will be released.
What happens next
MSC and the Coast Guard have not said how long repairs or corrective work will take. The vessel’s return to service will depend on the Coast Guard being satisfied that the cited deficiencies have been remedied.

Passengers affected by the cancelled voyage should seek written confirmation of refunds, travel support and any reimbursement available for independently booked flights, hotels or other trip costs.
